English 101 Readings

After reading chapter two, six and seven in The Omnivore's Dilemma I have a better understanding of where the food I consume comes from. In chapter two I learned how the food we eat all starts on farms similar to the Naylor farm. The corn that Naylor plants is corn that is not even edible until it is fed to livestock or processed into corn syrup and other things. Many farmers use a hybrid of the original corn plant, but Naylor does not because he believes in allowing the process of evolution to take its course. Another intersting fact is how hard it is to make a living and survive as a farmer. Even though corn is one of the main ingredients in everything we consume, the price per bushel is not enough to keep farms running as well as support the people that live on them.
In the first chapter of They Say I say, it discusses ways to introduce what other people are saying to introduce a topic or an arguement. When you incorporate what other people are saying you show many different views on a certain subject. I think that this helps to open up the topic being discussed or written about open to a broader audience. If you did not include critics on the topic or arguements already presented about the topic then people would not be as interested because they would feel that the discussion was pointless because they do not know what other people are saying about the topic.
